DIY Copper Wire Napkin Rings
Napkin rings! I love them. Don’t they just MAKE a table setting? Or even if I am not going to the trouble of setting a beautiful table, I still like to have something around the napkins. Otherwise - it’s just a napkin. One Thanksgiving I had many people coming to my house and not enough napkin rings. TALK ABOUT STRESS!! I may be over-dramatizing the situation. The gist is that I looked around my house to see what I could fashion into napkin rings and I found this copper wire in my hubby’s work bench. An hour later - voila! I had plenty of napkin rings and Thanksgiving was saved. (Again with the dramatics.)
Since Thanksgiving is this week and I would feel so bad if any of you are being traumatized by the lack of napkin rings, I want to give you this short little How-to. These copper wire napkin rings are trendy, sophisticated, simple and easy. What more could you ask?
Supplies Needed
Wire - 18 gauge worked best for me (actually, it was all I could find).
Wire cutters - if you don’t have them, use scissors to get it started and then bend it back and forth, back and forth until it breaks. Then, feel the ends and they will be hot - I get a thrill out of this little phenomenon. I feel powerful that I can make heat.
Pliers - these really help but I guess you could figure out something else to use to mash the ends.
A tubular shaped bottle or jar - approximately the size of a toilet paper tube.
Step 1:
Wrap the wire around the bottle 7 or 8 times, leaving some extra length at the beginning and the end.
Step 2:
Cut the wire and slide all the wire off the bottle and gather them closely together on one side.
Step 3:
Take that extra length at the end of the ring of wires and wrap it tightly around the wires.
Step 4:
When it is all wrapped around the wires (say, 3 or 4 times) use the wire cutters and cut off the excess at the ends. (No picture for this, just directions. I think you know what I mean, though.)
Step 5:
Be careful now because the ends are pokey. Use the pliers to bend the end of the wire back so that it points toward the inside of the rings.
Step 6:
Put a napkin through the ring and you are READY FOR THANKSGIVING! That’s all it takes!
I have made lots of other napkin rings but those will be stories for another time. I really want to know if I am alone in this obsession with napkin rings. Do you use them? Do you make them? Do you match them with the theme of the table? Let me know, I would love some more ideas.
